How to prepare for cold and rainy weather

How to prepare for cold and rainy weather

24th Jun 2024

Recent flooding in Auckland, and Northland with no power for days, serves as a reminder of the importance of preparing for cold and rainy weather and the power cuts/floods/winds that can follow.  The queenb team have put together a quick list of tips and emergency kit ideas to help prepare you for life's uncertainties........

Essential Clothing and Gear

Blue Blanket Hoodie by Bambury

  • In extremely cold weather, start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from the skin, add insulating layers for warmth, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer for protection against rain and wind.
  • Avoid getting damp and soaked in the rain, invest in a high-quality umbrella that has a wind-resistant frame but is also compact and lightweight making it easy to carry.
  • Don’t forget to protect your hands and feet with gloves and waterproof footwear to avoid frostbite which can be painful and make doing your everyday tasks much harder.
  • Wearing socks is important to avoid losing body heat and protects your body from any cold-related injuries.

Indoor Entertainment for Kids

  • It is important that everyone, especially kids, have some indoor entertainment, besides TV and iPads which may be unable to be used.
  • Playing cards is a great way to pass the time because there are so many ways to play and you can do this by candlelight.
  • Puzzles are also a great option to stay busy, and require no power!

Reliable Light Source

Luci Core Solar Portable Light

  • It is important to always watch where you are going in rainy weather especially if it is dark, use your phone torchlight. Slips and falls can be dangerous and lead to long-term injuries.
  • Always have candles, lighters, or torches in reach to use if the power goes out. Make sure to pack the spare batteries too
  • Lifelight Candles by Downlights are intended for emergency scenarios, they are portable and provide light for up to 40 hours.

Emergency Preparedness

  • It is important to always have an emergency kit prepared in case of stormy weather which can lead to floods, tornados, or even long-duration power cuts.
  • Have spare blankets packed for insulation and warmth, especially if you're stranded or without power for an extended period. This also should include spare clothes like pants, jackets, beanies, and socks.
  • A sturdy tarp or emergency shelter can protect you from wind and rain if you need to seek shelter outdoors.
  • Having a basic first aid kit with supplies to treat any injuries is super important too!
  • Pack non-perishable food and also lots of water. Don’t forget the can-opener and knife to open or prepare food.
  • Make sure to also keep personal items such as spare keys, glasses, etc. Sanitation supplies are also really important as well as personal documents, including written down phone contacts.

We hope for clear skies ahead, but given New Zealand's unpredictable weather patterns, there's always the likelihood of more rainy days ahead. In this country, where gusty winds and heavy rain can quickly escalate into emergencies, it's crucial to stay prepared. Emergencies often strike when we least expect them, so stay vigilant and be ready with any necessary supplies and plans in place.
